Welcome back to the Casa de Suna candle series!

If you can’t already tell by now, we’re candle obsessives over here. So, this month, we decided to pay it forward, by launching a series on candle care, candle centerpieces, repurposing candles, our favorite candle types, and more. We want to give you all of the information you never knew you needed but won’t be able to live without once you have it. Today, we’re rounding up our favorite types of candles–and don’t worry, we’re giving you links, too.

Tapered Candles

Taper Candles

Why we love them: Taper candles are pretty much as classic as it gets. Seriously, though–their first recorded use was in 3,000 BC. How’s that for vintage? They’ve had staying power for a reason: they’re elegant, don’t take up a ton of space, and add gorgeous light to any table setup.
When we burn them: Romantic dinners for two are the ultimate occasion for two well-placed tapers. They also look absolutely stunning down the center of a long, rectangular table.
How we’d style them: With the Il Buco Vita candlesticks, which offer up beautiful Medieval flair. It’s worth noting you need candlesticks in order to burn taper candles.
Purchase tips: We like beeswax taper candles, because they burn the longest.
Our top taper picks: Il Buco Vita twisted beeswax candles & The Floral Society taper candles

Pillar Candles

Pillar Candles

Why we love them: Pillar candles are an amazing way to add depth and dimension to any tabletop–whether it’s a dinner table, an entryway console, or a desk.
When we burn them: Some people reserve pillar candles for special occasions, but we love burning them whenever we get the chance–because they’re not scented, they’re suitable for even those who are sensitive to smells–and they always look amazing. We love lighting a couple of pillar candles when we’re cooking or working on a winter afternoon to bring a glamorous flicker to everyday activities.
How we’d style them: On top of the complementary Floral Society ceramic plate. We know it might seem tempting to burn pillar candles directly on a surface because of their hefty dimensions, but we promise you it’s not worth trying. These plates will keep your surfaces safe and look fabulous in the process.
Our top pillar picks: The Floral Society Hexagonal Pillar Candles

Votive Candles

Why we love them: A personal favorite of ours for livelier dinner parties, because of how quickly they burn–meaning minimal risk, even if you forget about them–votives are easy to find, and always look good.
When we burn them: Dinner parties, or whenever we need a quick hit of glamour in the home, but don’t have two hours to spare for a scented candle burning session.
How we’d style them: It never hurts to keep things simple when it comes to styling votives. This simple glass style is our personal favorite: a classic for a reason. For a slightly more adventurous option, go for the clear ribbed glass, or, if you’re hosting a fun night in, opt for the pink version–you really can’t go wrong.
Our top votive picks: Unscented Filled Glass Votive Candles

Ura Scented Candle

Scented Candles

Why we love them: Let’s be honest: there’s nothing not to love. Scented candles are one of the best ways to make even a simple space feel more elevated and true to you. They make houses feel like homes, turn small moments into long-term scent memories, and generally boost the ambiance of every single home.
When we burn them: All the time. (Unless, of course, we won’t be home long enough for a proper burn).
How we’d style them: One of the things we love most about scented candles is that they can serve as decor pieces all on their own–especially those that come in reusable vessels, like our Ferm Living and Carola Fra i Trulli pieces do. There’s really nothing you need to do to style them, besides make sure they’re sitting on a safe surface before they burn.
Our top scented picks: We can’t choose! But you can find every single candle we sell right here in the shop.
