Sometimes, reinventing a classic is called for.

And when you get a hint of the charred lemon wedges in our hot toddy, you’ll understand why. It only takes a few extra minutes and yields a subtle, smoky flavor–you’ll never go back to the original.

How to Make It

Difficulty: Easy

Overall Time: 10 min

Prep Time: 5 min

Cook Time: 5 min

Serves: 4

Ingredients
  • 1 lemon, cut crosswise into 4 thick wedges
  • 3 cups water
  • 6 oz Irish whisky, such as Jameson
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice
  • 4 cinnamon sticks, for garnish
  • 8 star anise, for garnish
Instructions
  1. Heat a small non-stick frying pan over high heat. When pan is hot, add lemon wedges cut side down. Sear until both cut sides of lemon are charred, about 1 to 2 minutes per side. Transfer charred lemons to a plate to cool slightly.
  2. Boil water in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat, then stir in whisky, honey and lemon juice.
  3. Pour hot toddy into four mugs. Garnish with cinnamon sticks, star anise and charred lemon wedges. Serve immediately.

Kitchen Tip

For a more classic hot toddy, omit charring lemon.
