After a year (plus!) of no travel, we found a new way to wanderlust.

The travel industry is seeing trends of people exploring what’s close by and connecting more within their local communities. This resurgence of local travel has kept us off planes (added bonus: it’s more sustainable) and inspired us to find some hidden gems near the cities we spend the most time in.

Check out these independently owned boutique hotels within driving distance of your city apartment.

The Colony Palms Hotel & Bungalows, Palm Springs

You can feel the old Hollywood history at The Colony Palms, a glamorous but understated holiday hideaway since the 1930s. In 2019, famed hotelier Steve Hermann took over and transformed the space into a gorgeous green-and-white oasis that still pays homage to Palm Springs’ retro roots. Enjoy a morning cappuccino al fresco at The Colony Club or relax with a hot stone massage at the Spa. You can’t go wrong.

Escape Manhattan at the Inns of Aurora, New York

Owned by Pleasant T. Rowland, the founder of American Girl, the Inns of Aurora is the quintessential storybook vacation. It’s tucked away in a tiny village near the Finger Lakes, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The boutique hotel is really five houses settled together to make up the inn. It has an in-house spa and endless options for private experiences making it the ultimate getaway for New Yorkers.

Escape Miami at The Betsy Hotel, South Beach

Need a staycation from sweaty Miami? Retreat to The Besty Hotel, a beachfront gem that Travel + Leisure called the “World’s Best.” Anchored on the quiet end of Ocean Drive, you’ll find a relaxing luxury family-owned hotel with thoughtful amenities, curated event programming, and unbeatable ambiance. (Oh, and you can even bring your four-legged friend.)

Escape Boston at Chatham Bars Inn

It’s not exactly a rarity for Bostonians to escape the city for Cape Cod, but few destinations do “the Cape” quite like Chatham Bars Inn. Private beach cabanas, farm-to-table dinners and private power yoga by the sea, Chatham Bars Inn provides all of the elements of a perfect summer weekend in one place.
