5 Charities to Consider for the Season of Giving

‘Tis the season for giving, and for giving back.

Here at Casa de Suna, we always take a moment before the holiday season really kicks in to think about how we can serve our community and the causes we care most about. Since it’s already an expensive and busy time of year, you can even tell your family members to make a donation on your behalf in lieu of a traditional gift.

The Actors Fund

Some of our fondest family memories are getting dressed up and attending Broadway shows, so the Actors Fund holds a special place in our heart. This nonprofit works year-round to provide a safety net for performing arts and entertainment professionals over their lifespan. Services include emergency financial assistance, affordable housing, health care and insurance counseling, senior care, secondary career development and more. And while this has been an incredible organization since 1882, the Actors Fund has felt especially necessary during the last few years when many entertainment professionals have been out of work due to COVID-19.

Toys for Tots

You may already be familiar with this wonderful, nationwide non-profit run by the U.S. Marine Corps. Each holiday season, they deliver hope (and gifts) to less fortunate children. Since 1947, they’ve delivered over 604 million toys to 272 million children. You can purchase a toy and drop it off at your local toy drop location, or you can donate money online.

The Food Bank of New York City

Food insecurity is a year-round crisis, but it can get especially troubling during the holiday season. There are food banks all over the U.S., so you can either find your local organization or support the efforts of one of the largest food banks in New York City. The best part about the food bank? There are so many different ways you can get involved. If you’re not in a place to donate money, you can drop off canned or packaged donations, or even volunteer for a day or an event.

Girls Write Now

Our name, Casa de Suna, translates to “House of Daughters.” So, empowering the next-generation of women is extremely important to us and our family. We immediately fell in love with the Girls Write Now mission, which helps underserved high school girls go farther with educational programs, networking, and one-on-one tutoring. This organization helps with college admissions, job applications, and even writing for self expression.

Angel Tree

There are 2.7 million children with an incarcerated parent in the U.S., and this can feel especially difficult during the holiday season. Angel Tree helps children feel cared for by accepting gift suggestions from mothers and fathers in prison and distributing the gifts on their behalf.
