Ever heard of amaro?

If not, grab some immediately: it’s the liqueur you didn’t know you needed. Paper Planes are one of our favorite ways to make use: they’re an herbal, refreshing cocktail perfect for any time of year. Opt for an Amaro like Montenegro to keep things slightly sweeter, or a classic Amaro Nonino for a slightly more bitter, classic taste.

How to Make It

Difficulty: Easy

Overall Time: 5 min

Prep Time: 5 min

Serves: 2

Ingredients
  • Ice cubes
  • 4 oz Aperol
  • 3 oz bourbon
  • 3 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1 oz amaro, such as Amaro Montengro or Amaro Nonino (optional)
  • 2 strips of lemon peel
Instructions
  1. Fill a cocktail shaker or large jar halfway with ice. Add Aperol, bourbon, lemon juice and amaro, if using. Shake until vessel is very frosty, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  2. Strain into coupe glasses. Twist a strip of lemon zest over each glass to release oils, then add to each cocktail.

Kitchen Tip

This recipe can be scaled up into a larger batch. Only two portions will fit in a cocktail shaker at a time, about ⅔ cup per portion.
