Tip #1: Develop a Storage Plan
Got winter-specific items you’re ready to store? Great. But take a beat before you start haphazardly throwing down coats into cardboard boxes. The key to successful storage is a plan. First, figure out how much you need to store, and how much space that will require. Be realistic. If you’re storing ski gear for your entire family, shelf space won’t cut it; you’ll need a storage closet, or, depending on the space you have available in your home, a storage unit.
Once you’ve identified your storage space, move on to your plan for containers. Ensure coats are properly protected in
storage bags. Next, tackle your sweaters: treat them with this
elevated moth repellent, and then drop them into a
transparent bag, to head off any potential lost-clothing chaos come next winter. Store all of your clothes together, whenever possible, keeping things like winter linens within transparent storage bags in their own designated spaces. Also: don’t be afraid to get rid of things you don’t use. Our rule? If you haven’t worn it once within the past two seasons, it’s time to give it away or donate.
Tip #2: Tackle the Time-Consuming Tasks First
Once you’ve stored your winter duvet and your holiday napkins appropriately, it’s time to breathe new life into your
spring linens. Throw everything into the wash – to keep things extra elevated, we even like to designate a
specific detergent to spring & summer. Get started on the rest of the house while your things are in the washing machine and dryer.
Tip #3: Take it One Room at a Time
Let’s be honest: you won’t get everything done if you try to do it all at once. Hate cleaning your kitchen? Dread scrubbing the bathroom? Start with whatever you find the most tedious first. We like to put on an engaging podcast while we scrub – but these days, there are even “
cleaning meditations” you can do to help motivate you through the more arduous tasks.
Once you’ve identified what room you’re going to start in, set yourself up with a product lineup. One of our absolute favorite cleaning hacks is
Force of Nature, a toxin-free, sustainable all-purpose cleaner that truly gets every single stain out with very little elbow grease required. We find that little extra peace of mind that comes with using a cleaner that’s safe for everyone – including kids and pets – makes the extra initial investment worth it. Grab your preferred cleaning solution and your microfiber cleaning cloths (a must for any sort of smooth, non-wooden surface) and get to work.
Tip #4: Reward Yourself for a Job Well-Done
Once you’ve finished the actual storage, linen replacement, and full-home scrub, you’ll likely feel both exhausted and accomplished. But the spring clean doesn’t have to stop there. We find that nothing lifts our spirits more than putting the finishing touches on a spotless home than a thematic treat. Why not scent your space with a spring-forward airy and floral candle?
Throw open a window (always a must after any intensive cleaning, whether your products are nontoxic or not) and scent your space with a spring-forward airy and floral candle to bring a new dimension of freshness into your home. Top it off with a gorgeous vase of fresh flowers, and you will have created the ultimate spring-ready space.
