When renowned industry magazine Variety’s Chief Correspondent writes a book about Oscars, you know it’s going to be juicy. We’re dying to get our hands on a copy of Daniel D’Addario’s newly released The Talent, a novel about a fictional Oscars race that follows five actresses, all at different stages of their career, on their path from nomination to the night itself.
If you read The Talent and want more of the real thing when it comes to insider information about how Hollywood works, let us direct you to Lorne, the sweeping biography of Lorne Michaels. If you don’t know that name, you’re definitely aware of his legacy: he created America’s most beloved weekly comedy show–and one of the launching pads for more A-list superstars than almost anywhere else–Saturday Night Live. Lorne is a full-fledged look behind the curtain, with insight from some of the world’s biggest stars, into how Michaels has managed to keep SNL a powerhouse for fifty years and counting.
There’s no doubt that Dream Count is the hottest book of the moment; and if you read and loved Americanah when it came out (like we did), you’re going to want to get your hands on it before it sells out (yes, we anticipate it being that popular). Dream Count follows the lives of five Nigerian women, living between Nigeria and America, weaving together their stories in seamless fashion. It’s author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s first novel in ten years, and we have it on good authority that it’s more than worth the wait.
You may not have heard of Pamela Harriman, but she’s more than likely connected to a lot of people you do consider household names. Harriman was Winston Churchill’s daughter-in-law, and though she was dismissed during her lifetime (and shortly after her death), she was a powerful force behind-the-scenes during World War II, a key peacemaker while she served as an ambassador to France, and even a driving force in bringing Bill Clinton to the White House. We love a fascinating look into an underestimated woman, and while Harriman’s time in the limelight is long overdue, we’re just happy it’s here.
This fascinating, futuristic tale begins in 2040 Shanghai, but each chapter slowly rewinds the story until we land all the way back in 2014. The book tells the story of the wealthy Wang family; from the perspective of the three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Wang, and all of the lives they touch, from those they’ve met in passing to a driver, a former nanny, and friends. It’s a creative, absorbing tale that’s both well-written and a quick, absorbing read.
