Weatherproof your outdoor space
There’s nothing better than hosting an outdoor soirée, and there’s really nothing better than the first outdoor event of the season.
With that said, spring weather gets a bit unpredictable, so it’s best to be prepared. Here are all of the little things we do to ensure we’re set up for success to host outdoors.
Umbrellas over everything!
There are multiple expressions about spring’s unpredictable weather for a reason. Protect yourself–and your guest–against spring showers by ensuring that, if you plan to eat outdoors, you’re covered with umbrellas in case it rains. And fear not: they can be incredibly chic. Our personal favorites are from the
Business & Pleasure Company, and they’ll bring a bit of extra personality to any spring table.
Anchor your napkins
Wind is another factor we always consider when it comes to prepping for an early season al fresco meal. There’s nothing more frustrating than napkins blowing away, which is why we
always incorporate napkin rings into our place settings. Plus, they’re an easy way to elevate any tablescape–especially if you opt for an elegant and refined set like
these ones we love from Hunting Season.
Keep your dinnerware heavy
Speaking of ensuring things don’t blow away–no paper plates here! You’ll want to use heavy, sturdy ceramic dinnerware for your meal. We’re partial to
Casafina for
pasta bowls and Revol for
gorgeous dinner plates.
One blanket per seat
If you’re eating outside, you’re going to want to make sure your guests are comfortable. And, while we’d like to think the spring weather is all sunshine and warm breezes, it’s good to be prepared just in case. We like to drape a blanket over each guest’s chair, just in case the breeze gets chilly. In fact, we do this during all season–it makes it easier to stay out chatting long after the meal is finished and has helped us create some of our all-time favorite memories.
If necessary, invest in gadgets
If you live somewhere where the weather is really unpredictable, you may want to invest in a heat lamp. Yes, it’s an investment, but it’ll make your outdoor dinners a lot more comfortable.
Host dinner on the early side–or opt for a brunch
Another thing to consider when it comes to spring weather: it’s much easier to ensure a warm, sunny meal in the daytime–and you won’t have to deal with the summertime concern that it’s too hot outside. Why not host a
brunch?
