Have you heard of tapping yet?

If not, prepare yourself–you will soon. Though it’s been around since the 1990s, this wellness practice is enjoying a major moment. If you’re not sure what it is–but want to learn more–read on for our interview with tapping enthusiast (and our favorite wellness expert) Wondersource founder Michelle Velan, and prepare to find your new favorite wellness practice.

QUESTION 01What is tapping?

Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), is a powerful mind-body practice that combines gentle tapping on specific acupressure points with focused attention on thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations. Often called “psychological acupressure,” it works with the same energy meridians used in traditional Chinese medicine—just without the needles.

EFT is a form of somatic therapy, and research shows remarkable benefits. For example, one study found up to a 43% decrease in cortisol levels (our primary stress hormone) after a tapping session.

Studies have shown it can help with anxiety, pain, cravings, phobias, and so much more.

QUESTION 02How did you hear about tapping? What made you start?

I can’t even remember where I first heard about it. I’ve always been drawn to different healing modalities and my curiosity has led me to explore many—Reiki, coaching, subconscious freedom work, trauma-informed coaching, and of course, tapping.

I started because I sensed there was so much more to my mental health than I could explain with words. I knew the patterns I was experiencing lived in my body and nervous system—not just in my mind—and I needed something that could go deeper.

From the very first time I tried tapping, I was hooked.

QUESTION 02How does tapping work?

When we’re stressed or overwhelmed, our nervous system can get stuck in “fight, flight, freeze or fawn.” By tapping on acupressure points while naming what we feel, we send calming signals to the brain and body.

Research shows that tapping can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), quiet the amygdala (the brain’s fear center), and help rewire negative thought patterns. The result is greater calm, emotional regulation, and the ability to meet challenges with more clarity and confidence.

And if you don’t have time to tap, even simply labeling what you’re feeling can be regulating: “A part of me is feeling anxiety. A part of me is feeling fear.” When emotions are witnessed, the physiological response begins to diminish.

QUESTION 03How would you describe the way you feel before vs. after tapping?

It really depends on what I’m tapping for.

Take fear, for example: I might feel off—anxious, disconnected from myself—and when I check in, I notice there’s fear around something. I’ll feel it in my body, then do a tapping video. Afterward, I feel so much more relaxed.

I think of it like our emotions are cute little monsters that just need love and attention. When I tap, it’s as if the fearful monster feels seen and no longer needs to demand as much from me. I come back to a place of calm, presence, and flow, able to carry on with my day.

You can use tapping for so many things, and it’s great for in-the-moment triggers like fear, anxiety, stress, health stress, or sleep.

Deeper patterns that are a work in progress, like money blocks, abandonment wounds, inner child healing, or shifting into an abundance mindset.

QUESTION 04What are your favorite tapping methods? Are there specific things you like to tap on?

Worthiness. I tapped on it for a long time. I have a personality that’s always curious, always stretching the limits of what’s possible, which naturally brings up shadows, fears, and feelings of unworthiness.

I think we should always be growing and so this inner work isn’t a one time thing. You can build a solid foundation and then the next time you’re upleveling or moving towards a bigger dream, new fears or feelings of unworthiness might resurface. It’s not a sign that something is wrong, it’s a good thing! It’s a sign you’re growing.

If you never feel fear or any shadows, it probably just means you’re not challenging yourself.

I often return to fear tapping videos, and I also tap on self-love, sales, and abundance mindset.

Over the years, I’ve tapped on just about everything—shame, sadness, anger, money blocks, abundance, wealth mindset, fear of being seen, and more. It’s such a powerful practice.
