What’s in Season for Summer

It’s no secret that we love to eat seasonally.

Not only does food taste fresher, even when simply prepared, but it’s also better for you and the planet. Shopping local, in particular, is the best possible way to ensure sustainability–your food lasts longer, because it hasn’t made a long plane trip to get to you. Buying at a Farmer’s Market is your best bet, since you can also speak directly to the farmer or someone who works directly with them on how fresh the food truly is–not a reality in a stocked supermarket, where all you have to rely on is an (often arbitrary!) expiration date. To find a farmer’s market near you, check out this guide.

As far as what’s generally in season across North America in the summer, look no further than our 2025 seasonal summer produce guide (plus, get some recipes to go along with all of the fresh and fabulous ingredients).

Corn

There are fewer vegetables more summer-forward than corn. Peak-season corn is delicious no matter how you cook it, but our personal favorite way: grilled and topped with a delicious miso butter–and, lucky for you, we’ve got an easy-to-follow recipe right here.

Cucumbers

While you probably eat cucumbers year-round, May through August is the best time to enjoy fresh ones in North America. Whether you’re fixing yourself a refreshing cucumber-basil smash, enjoying a healthy dinner of miso-glazed salmon with smashed cucumber salad, or enjoying a refreshing light meal of cantaloupe and cucumber Fattoush, you won’t regret stocking up during your next market haul.

Tomatoes

Forgive us for incorporating a mini tomato recipe roundup into this article, but we’d be remiss not to share all of our favorite menu heroes that feature our favorite summer fruit. From a simple and easy to transport cherry tomato focaccia for summer hors d’oeuvres; to roasted cherry tomatoes on an herbed ricotta tartine for an alfresco lunch; beefsteak tomatoes with ginger miso dressing or a marinated tomato and chickpea salad for a simple but perfect appetizer; to roasted tomato and quinoa salad; to our summer favorite dinner: grilled steak with heirloom tomatoes, brown butter, and fresh basil, you can’t go wrong. Long story short: buy more tomatoes than you think you need on your next food shop.

Zucchini

Let’s call it cucumber’s sophisticated older sister. Zucchini is a bit less crunchy and hydrating, but oh-so-versatile. Our personal favorite way to enjoy it while it’s in season is atop a burrata pizza like this one.

Peaches

There’s nothing quite like biting into a fresh summer peach. In fact, some might argue the peach is a perfect food on its own. But they probably haven’t tried our peach, pistachio, and ginger galette. Capitalizing on the season’s most succulent fruit and pairing it with the creamy pistachio flavor while adding a zing of ginger makes for a dessert as decadent as it is refreshing. Maybe…make two?
