Scandi-Inspired Mulled Wine

Published Dec 22

If there's a drink that tastes like the holidays, it's mulled wine.

This version draws from Scandinavian glogg, using orange, ginger, and cardamom to create something warm, fragrant, and exactly what a cold evening calls for. We keep it straightforward with one bottle of wine, but you can easily double or triple the batch when you’re entertaining.

How to Make It

Difficulty: Easy

Overall Time: 1 hr 15 min

Prep Time: 15 min

Cook Time: 1 hr steeping

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 bottle (750 mL) dry red wine, such as Pinot Noir
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ large navel orange, sliced into ¼-inch-thick rounds
  • 12 cloves
  • 8 green cardamom pods, cracked
  • 2 slices fresh peeled ginger, about ¼-inch thick
  • 1 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
  • 4 oz rum or brandy (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Combine wine with sugar, orange, cloves, cardamom, ginger and cinnamon in a medium non-reactive pot.
  2. Add rum or brandy, if using, and set over medium heat. Bring just to a gentle simmer, then cover with a lid and immediately remove from the heat. Let stand until flavors have infused, for 1 hour.
  3. Strain mixture through a fine mesh-sieve to remove the aromatics, then return to the pot.
  4. Set over medium heat and re-warm before serving, ensuring mixture doesn’t come to a boil. Serve in stemmed glasses or mugs.
